Yorkshire – Lights, Camera, Action
29 March 2023Lights, Camera, Action – Visit some of these film and TV locations, perhaps meet the stars.
Over the last three decades we have seen an explosion of film and television directors choosing to shoot there productions right here in Yorkshire.
This has been Hollywood blockbusters through to television dramas, along with documentaries about individuals (some real Yorkshire Characters) and businesses.
To name but a few, Harry Potter, Mission: Impossible, Dad’s Army, Indiana Jones, Happy Valley, Ackley Bridge, All Creatures Great and Small, The Yorkshire Vet, Bangers and Cash, The Yorkshire Auction House, Hullraisers and of course Heartbeat!
While Yorkshire has always had a strong screen presence, this influx in the past 20 years can be attriburted in part to Screen Yorkshire.
In 2002 the UK Film Council established nine regional screen agencies, Screen Yorkshire is now a standalone company and has an impressive record.
Their work and the production that take place here support 12,000 jobs, create a turnover in excess of £1 billion and has seen a 82% rise in TV and film employment, right here in Yorkshire.
Clearly, there are too many productions to list in this blog, so we thought we would draw a few out that have happened very close to our doorstep.
A Day of Hollywood Bingo
Why not play a game of bingo and see how many locations you can visit that have featured in film and TV series with a global appeal?
Tom Cruise was recently filming Mission: Impossible 7 in Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, he even landed his helicopter in a resident’s garden!
Not to be outdone, Harrison Ford dusted down his fedora to shoot scenes in Grosmont for the latest Indiana Jones instalment.
Perhaps you’d like to move on to a diffent kind of genre, why not visit Castle Howard and see where Emma Thompson brought Lady Marchmain to life in Brideshead Revisited.
Interestingly, Castle Howard was the wedding reception venue for Ellie Goulding after her marriage at York Minster.
If comedy is more your thing, the film version of the popular television series Dad’s Army was filmed in and around the old town of Bridlington and saw Catherine Zeta Jones swimming in the harbour.
You could of course finish your game by a visit to the Palace Cinema in Malton. This picture house is a family-owned traditional market town cimena, showing the latest blockbusters but with the romance of yesteryear.
For a full house, why not see if you can spot the King and Queen Consort who often stay in the next village to us when visiting the area.
Fly on the Wall TV Series
If film isn’t your thing, why not visit a few of the locations that are currently being shown on mainstream TV.
We are ideally located for you to have a day out and visit the team at Bangers and Cash, the showroom is great to walk round.
Derek, Paul and Dave along with the rest of the team are usually on hand, be careful though – a slight nod of your head and you may have purchased a classic car!
Talking of auctions, another feelgood series to watch is the Yorkshire Auction House, perhaps you will pick up an antique or have something to sell. You could not ask to meet a nicer man than Angus.
While out that way, why not drop in on The Yorkshire Vet and see the comings-and-goings of former Herriot Trainee Peter Wright and partner, Julian Norton, as they care for animals in the rural communities – you may even bump into Jeanie!
You may have read the books or remember the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, – it has been remade and is currently filming in the area.
The City of York is also a backdrop for many productions such as Gentleman Jack – and don’t forget the hit Bridgerton was also filmed in the area.
We would stress that this is just a glimpse into the various locations used for film and television locations, to find out more and perhaps do a bit of celebrity spotting why not book one of cottages at ‘This Is Not Here’ and create your own lights, camera, action from one of our amazing cottages.
